SOME OF THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN CENTRAL OREGON

Oregon is not just Portland, which most travelers think about when they head for this state, no there are other parts of the state that not only offers visitors a lot to do but a lot of pretty good places to eat. Central Oregon with it’s main cities being Bend, Redmond, Sisters and Prineville have proof that you don’t have to go to the big city to find good food to eat. Here are a few of the best places to find good eats in this part of the state.

10 Barrel Brewing Co. is one for those who like the trendy brewpub and it attracts both locals and visitors for its great tasting beer and food. They even serve hand tossed pizza daily as well as great salads and a variety of different kinds of homemade sandwiches. They have a cozy bar area where you can enjoy the views of Central Oregon on summer days or huddle around patio fires during crisp winter nights.

Pine Tavern is located in the Old Town area and it’s named for the Ponderosa pine tree that actually grows through their back dining room. This is a restaurant is loved by the locals and has been serving up high end meals since 1936. Their specialties are their steaks, prime rib and pot pie and you can sit on their lovely patio during the summer and enjoy the lovely views of both Mirror Pond and Bend’s beautiful Drake Park.

Pilot Butte Drive-In is not a fancy place it’s just what it says a Drive-In, but if you’re looking for old fashioned type of atmosphere and food you can’t go wrong. They have great old fashioned burgers or if you don’t want that you can have their famous chicken fried steak or if you are really hungry try their 18 ounce burger made by hand. They also serve up some killer fried mushrooms and zucchini as well.

Baldy’s Barbeque is one of Bend’s best family friendly barbecue spots that serves up delicious and tender ribs, chicken, brisket, pulled pork and even catfish. The space of this eatery is quite humble but don’t be fooled by that, they believe it’s more important to serve the best food with their own sauces than offer a fancy atmosphere.

Looking for good Mexican food? La Rosa is considered the best Bend has to offer. Not only do they serve your classic Mexican combos but they also serve gourmet dishes like grilled prawns that are wrapped in apple smoked bacon. Along with the delicious food you have to make sure that you try their famous Red Cactus Margarita, it’s a must try.

If you like quaint, the city of Sisters is just that, the entire city looks like a small town out of the old west and the Depot Cafe continues that look and feel with it’s railroad theme on main street. There’s a miniature train that circles above the kitchen as they serve up delicious sandwiches and dinner specials. You will enjoy both the food and the charming rustic atmosphere of this cafe.

If you are looking for a little more class and are willing to pay for it then Jen’s Garden in Sisters is what you’re looking for. This is a top class French restaurant that offers three course as well as five course meals in an intimate French cottage setting. The menu changes often to incorporate seasonal specialties and fresh ingredients. They try to keep the menu fresh and interesting from wild mushroom gnocchi to braised beef cheek ragout.

The small town of Redmond knows how to give you an elegant dining experience with the Brickhouse that specializes in steaks and pork chops as well as seafood with their specialty being shellfish. It’s a charming setting with lovely wood tables and brick walls and you definitely will not be disappointed in it’s cocktails and wines list from all over Oregon and the world.

Finally there’s Barney Prine’s Steakhouse & Saloon found in Prineville. This little steakhouse and saloon is named after one of the founders of Prineville and it’s a great place to get a tasty and tender filet mignon, pepper steak, slow smoked prime rib and their 1 pound ribeye steak. They also serve good chicken, seafood, pasta and on occasion they add wild game to the menu since hunting is a big thing in Central Oregon. Great place to kick back, have good food and enjoy the frontier western atmosphere.
